Behind the scenes, the Americans are seriously pushing both proposals with the Iraqi National Congress (INC), the umbrella for a wide range of anti-Saddam groups, most of which operated in exile until the Iraqi dictator’s regime collapsed earlier this month. But Washington’s game plan is running into stiff opposition from Iraq’s Shiite majority, which seeks to dominate the post-Saddam government and which is increasingly hostile to the US and its Iraqi surrogates like the INC, including Chalabi even though he is a Shiite.

Regarding the situation in Iraq, it appears to this Senator that the American people may have been lured into accepting the unprovoked invasion of a sovereign nation, in violation of long-standing International law, under false premises. There is ample evidence that the horrific events of September 11 have been carefully manipulated to switch public focus from Osama Bin Laden and Al Queda who masterminded the September 11th attacks, to Saddam Hussein who did not. The run up to our invasion of Iraq featured the President and members of his cabinet invoking every frightening image they could conjure, from mushroom clouds, to buried caches of germ warfare, to drones poised to deliver germ laden death in our major cities. We were treated to a heavy dose of overstatement concerning Saddam Hussein's direct threat to our freedoms. The tactic was guaranteed to provoke a sure reaction from a nation still suffering from a combination of post traumatic stress and justifiable anger after the attacks of 9/11. It was the exploitation of fear. It was a placebo for the anger.
Since the war's end, every subsequent revelation which has seemed to refute the previous dire claims of the Bush Administration has been brushed aside. Instead of addressing the contradictory evidence, the White House deftly changes the subject. No weapons of mass destruction have yet turned up, but we are told that they will in time. Perhaps they yet will. But, our costly and destructive bunker busting attack on Iraq seems to have proven, in the main, precisely the opposite of what we were told was the urgent reason to go in. It seems also to have, for the present, verified the assertions of Hans Blix and the inspection team he led, which President Bush and company so derided. As Blix always said, a lot of time will be needed to find such weapons, if they do, indeed, exist. Meanwhile Bin Laden is still on the loose and Saddam Hussein has come up missing.
What has become painfully clear in the aftermath of war is that Iraq was no immediate threat to the U.S. Ravaged by years of sanctions, Iraq did not even lift an airplane against us. Iraq's threatening death-dealing fleet of unmanned drones about which we heard so much morphed into one prototype made of plywood and string. Their missiles proved to be outdated and of limited range. Their army was quickly overwhelmed by our technology and our well trained troops.
But, I contend that, through it all, the people know. The American people unfortunately are used to political shading, spin, and the usual chicanery they hear from public officials. They patiently tolerate it up to a point. But there is a line. It may seem to be drawn in invisible ink for a time, but eventually it will appear in dark colors, tinged with anger. When it comes to shedding American blood -- when it comes to wreaking havoc on civilians, on innocent men, women, and children, callous dissembling is not acceptable. Nothing is worth that kind of lie -- not oil, not revenge, not reelection, not somebody's grand pipedream of a democratic domino theory.
And mark my words, the calculated intimidation which we see so often of late by the "powers that be" will only keep the loyal opposition quiet for just so long. KUWAIT, May 25 (Reuters) - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, in remarks published on Sunday, blamed Israel for the tense ties between his country and the United States.
"The only problem between us and the United States is the issue of Israel. There is no bilateral problem," Assad told Kuwait's al-Anbaa daily.
"America is satisfied with Syria and (other) Arab countries (only) when the Israelis are satisfied with us," he said. "What kind of a logic is that?. America is an influential power and we need to have a direct relationship with it without (Israel) between us."
The United States accuses Syria, along with Iran, of sponsoring terrorism, in part due to their support for militant anti-Israeli groups like Lebanon's Hizbollah.
Washington has also accused Damascus of seeking to develop non-conventional weapons and giving refuge to senior Iraqi officials after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein's rule.
Assad said his country would continue to support Hizbollah for as long as the group limits its operations to defending Lebanon from Israeli threats.
"We have told the Americans once Israel stops its continued provocation and aggressions (against Lebanon) there will not be any action from Hizbollah. Israel attacks and they (have to) respond," he said.
"As long as its actions are in this framework, we will continue to support the group. Hizbollah does not pursue any other goal."
In May 2000, Israel withdrew from an occupation zone it had carved out in south Lebanon in 1982 with the aim of protecting its northern border from guerrilla attacks.
Syria, the main power broker in its smaller neighbour Lebanon, started peace talks with Israel in the 1990s but the negotiations stalled over the fate of the Golan Heights which Israel seized from Damascus during a 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

In 1967,during the six day war, a small portion of Lebanese land known as Shebaa Farms,which are rich in water wells, was "conquered" by the Israeli Defense Forces.The occupation of this portion of south Lebanon and the subjugation of the southern lebanese farmer( who had nothing to do with the 6 day war) to Israeli terror has been going on exactly for thirty six years now.
While Israel pulled out of the occupation of Sharons "Bluffer Zone" in 2000 in a humiliating defeat and in a major victory for the Hizballah, they did not pull out completely.They stayed in Shebaa Farms which as we mentioned before is RICH in water.It is interesting to note that Palestine/Israel which is known as the Land of milk and honey hath no water and Israel has been illiegaly siphoning the water from the southern Lebaneses' land since 1967.
The Southern Lebanese Hizballah (Hizb = Party Allah = God) the Party of God have been fighting for their lives and land back since 1967 and the minute the Israelis leave their land the struggle will be over.Its as simple as that.Israel is the occupier in this case and it is clear that when our "honest"secretary of state Colin Powell says that Syria and Lebanon must "reign in" and stop Hizballah from its armed struggle, eithger he has no idea who the Hizballah are or he is speaking for Israel and not the USA.This is the same Colin Powell who went to Israel last year in the midst of the Jennin Massacres and saw no massacre.

BAGHDAD, Iraq — There was a bit of unfinished business left over in Baghdad from the 1991 Gulf War. The U.S. Army has taken care of it.
At the Al-Rashid Hotel, President Bush the elder — father of the current American chief executive who ordered this year's invasion of Iraq — is a doormat no more.
U.S. soldiers visited the battered Al-Rashid on Thursday night wielding hammers and chisels, and dug out the intricate tile mosaic of the former president that was used for years as a state-sponsored insult.
In its place, they laid a portrait of Saddam Hussein.
"Everybody walked over it and wiped their feet on it," Lt. Col. Rick Schwartz, the battalion commander said. He left the Saddam portrait behind, on the ground for future use.
Taking shoes to the face is not exactly a compliment in any culture, but in the Arab world it's a particular slam. Pointing the soles of one's feet at someone is a grave insult.
So the notion of thousands of Iraqi feet trudging over the patrician features of George Herbert Walker Bush was particularly appealing to Saddam's regime, humiliated by Bush during the 1991 Gulf War to free Kuwait from Iraqi invaders.
Saddam persoanlly picked the Al-Rashid for the insult to Bush senior. The hotel was heavily trafficked by foreign guests and the base of operations for journalists during the 1991 war — and the place where, on the night of the first American airstrike in January 1991, Arab guests huddled in the basement and shouted "Death to Bush."
The mosaic, an unflattering portrait of Bush with his teeth bared in a scowl, was installed later in 1991 right in the Al-Rashid's doorway complete with a caption in Arabic and English: "Bush is criminal."
The location made it almost impossible to avoid. And for years, it worked.
U.N. Special Envoy Lakhdar Brahimi stepped on the upper lip and part of the nose in 1997. Russian nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky trod upon the Adam's apple that same year after roundly condemning American aggression.
Former U.N. weapons inspector Scott Ritter made a point of sidestepping it in 1998. As recently as November, chief U.N. weapons inspector Hans Blix and International Atomic Energy Agency head Mohammed ElBaradei each trudged over a Bush shoulder.
On Thursday night, the Army forces destroying the mosaic chipped away until it was unrecognizable. They left behind thousands of little pieces in the concrete of the floor — as ravaged as the hotel itself, which is now uninhabitable.
"We did some remodeling," Schwartz said, referring to a battle that took place there when Iraqi snipers used the building to fire on U.S. forces.
Now, as people in Baghdad rush through the streets yelling "Bush! Bush!" and thrusting thumbs in the air, at the al-Rashid Hotel a decade-long insult has been removed — by a military commanded by a son who waged a second war on Iraq and insisted it wasn't personal. art [11:48 PM]
